The Polish city of Krakow will be the venue of the next WYD in 2016. The announcement was made by Pope Francis during the closing Mass of WYD 2013. The last Pope to visit Poland was Benedict XVI back in 2006.
It was a few months ago, when the city's current archbishop Stanislaw Dziwisz, who was also John Paul II's secretary, announced that the city was being considered to host the massive event.
The decision will serve as a homage to the Polish Pope, who served as archbishop of the city from 1964 till 1978. First of all, because it was John Paul II who launched WYD, and also because the city had a special place in his heart. He often said, that in Krakow, he felt at home. Out of nine trips he made to his home country, he visited that city four times. The last visit was in 2002, three years before his death.
